From Friday 1th to Sunday 3d November almost 600 Optimist

Larry Lemieux, symbol of sportsmanship in the Olympics in Pusan ‘88 (De Coubertin medal), in recent days guest at the Circolo Vela Torbole in the role of coach, great example for young people with the victory of the medal Pierre De Coubertin.

As every year, the sporting activity on Lake Garda Trentino ends with the Halloween Cup, Optimist regatta organized by the Circolo Vela Torbole on behalf of the Italian Sailing Federation FIV from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 November, which in just 7 years has reached impressive numbers, considered the season. This year there are 564 pre-registered athletes from 27 countries for an event, which assigns the trophy to the club with the best four athletes in the junior category.

This season's finale is therefore demanding, with so many children in a class, the Optimist class, which can now also celebrate the victory of the three-time world champion Marco Gradoni, the world's highest sailing award, the Rolex World Sailor of the year. Gradoni, in fact, who has been present several times at the regattas organized in Garda Trentino and has won practically all the major events of recent years, has won the prestigious prize, the only Italian after the Olympic Alessandra Sensini and the youngest athlete ever, thus flanking other sacred monsters of planetary sailing.

The Halloween Cup for this edition comes with a news: the use of robotic buoys throughout the race course, which in the case of the Optimist class, is the one that requires the most (6). In this way, even if still at the test level, a project shared with all the clubs of Upper Garda has been realized, which has a twofold objective: to protect the lake by avoiding leaving bricks and peaks in the water; to offer regattas the best of existing technology in order to be able to place race courses that meet the levels of excellence of the guests, as well as the increasingly stringent demands of international sailing classes and official regattas. For this reason, on the occasion of the opening of the Halloween Cup, Thursday, October 31 at 11:00 am at the Circolo Vela Torbole, will be present together with representatives of the clubs of Upper Garda with which we share the project (Fraglia vela Riva, Lega Navale di Riva, Circolo Vela Arco, Circolo Surf Torbole and of course Circolo Vela Torbole), the technicians of the Swiss company Roboboj, who will explain how it works and details. “The experiment, with the consequent risks that in this phase the technology may reserve, will have to test the difficult conditions of the lake that occur, as we know, with strong wind and very short wave: elements certainly"; for the life of the batteries, are equipped. But it's time to look ahead and do something concrete also in the sporting activities that concern us closely, responding with facts to the "cry of alarm"; of our young people, for a better planet" - commented the President of the Circolo Vela Torbole Gianpaolo Montagni, on behalf of all the other Presidents of the club.

And speaking of good intentions to report in these days the presence at the Circolo Vela Torbole Larry Lemieux, a symbol of great sportiness for all: the Canadian, during the Olympics in Seoul, Pusan, lost a medal in the Finn class for having rescued a crew 470, in difficulty due to the harsh conditions of sea and wind. At the podium almost conquered Larry was faced with a choice: to follow the main rule of the sea and then to give up the medal to help his colleagues, or that of absolute selfishness. The gesture of helping the two sailors was rewarded, surprisingly by Lemieux himself, with the awarding in the middle of the Olympic prize-giving ceremony, of the Pierre De Coubertin medal, delivered by the then president of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Saramanch. A history of great sport, from which the young participants in the Hallloween Cup and beyond, will receive a great teaching.
